SAILING SCHOOL ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS


S. ARTHUR PETERSON / DICKSON AWARD

S Arthur Peterson Dickson Shore School Trophy was given by a member of the shore school in 1955 in honor of the then Commodore Peterson who had overseen construction of the old clubhouse. The trophy was to be given to “a member of the shore school selected by the instructors as the sailor who has progressed the most and has shown the most enthusiasm.” The S. Arthur Peterson Dickson Award is the most prestigious award given by the club.

The female sailing school student whose racing record and support of sailing at CYC most promotes the sport of yachting by encouraging proficiency in seamanship and sportsman-like conduct

The male sailing school student whose racing record and support of sailing at CYC most promotes the sport of yachting by encouraging proficiency in seamanship and sportsman-like conduct

CARY SAMPSON AWARD:

The instructor whose dedication and enthusiasm for teaching sailing best exemplifies the volunteerism so necessary to maintain the vitality of CYC.

LANE LEIGHTON TROPHY: SAILING SCHOOL ELIMINATION RACE

In 1966 shore school instructors Charlie Leighton and Julie Lane instituted a year-end elimination race for all shore school students and donated the Lane-Leighton Trophy, a milk can, which has traditionally been used to dunk the winner.

SINGLE-HANDED COMPETITION

In 1966 Stephen Goheen and Walter McClennen made and donated the GoMac Hand for a single-handed competition. The competition was to be an annual, unscheduled pick-up race of instructors and others who did not regularly sail Beetle Cats.


WORK HARD, BE KIND AWARD HONORING JOHN W HUGHAN

Established in 2025, this award honors a sailor who consistently demonstrates kindness, respect, and a caring spirit towards their fellow sailors and instructors. They embody the true heart of our sailing community by offering encouragement, lending a helping hand, and fostering an inclusive and supportive environment both on and off the water. Their positive attitude and compassion make them a role model for all.

EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE AWARDS


ALAN MCCLENNEN SENIOR AWARD:


This award was established in August 2004 when the Chatham Yacht Club and Eastward Ho! Golf Club honored Alan McClennen Senior for his devotion and contributions to both organizations. The award is granted to a young athlete who exemplifies enthusiasm and good sportsmanship in golf and sailing in honor of Alan McClennen’s support of young people and sports.

John Wesp Award:

The club member who best exemplifies the club's spirit of dedication and cheerful volunteerism.

Taylor AWARD:

This trophy will be awarded annually to the Chatham Yacht Club student, staff member, or other yacht club member who selflessly displays the most passion and ability to pass on his or her knowledge of sailing, racing, and seamanship to other sailors, consistent with Chatham Yacht Club values. Let the annual recipient stand as a role model for all in the sport. Established in 2013 by former CYC Sailing Masters Emily and Willis Taylor.

JOIN ME AT THE CLUB AWARD:

This award is presented to a person or family to recognize their efforts in promoting the inclusion of new and existing members in Club activities, social, sailing, volunteer, development, or otherwise. The long-term health and effectiveness of Chatham Yacht Club and its ability to meet the mission is determined by the level of participation and engagement of its members. Those who receive this award are being recognized for their enthusiasm and efforts in getting people involved. The award recipient embodies the idea that the more members are involved the better the results. This trophy symbolizes the warmth that people appreciate by being welcomed and included. Thank you for what

you have done to ensure the continued success of Chatham Yacht Club. Established by the Wesp family in 2021.

SEE SAW AWARD:

Given by the Patrol Captains in honor of Jeff Taylor and to those individuals who patrol to protect us. Established in 2021 by Ann Sampson and Alice Ronty in honor of Jeff Taylor.

THE SHIPLEY FAMILY ADULT SAILING PROGRAM AWARD

This award was established in 2024 to honor Bill and Jensie Shipley, and their daughters Karen, Barbara and Gwen, who have been integral to Chatham Yacht Club as students, parents, instructors, program directors, members of the Executive Committee and Commodores for more than six decades.

It is to be awarded annually to a student or instructor in the Adult Sailing Program selected by the Executive Committee who has shown the most enthusiasm, demonstrated a passion for sailing and seamanship and, in the case of student awardees, has progressed the most that season.

ROGERS BOWL: 420'S

In 1962 the Samuel S. Rogers family, marking three generations of participation in CYC, presented the Rogers Bowl for the Tuesday Daysailer Series. In 1999 the trophy was transferred to the Tuesday 420 series, as the Daysailers were no longer racing on Tuesdays.

The Midweek Bowl was designated for the Tuesday Beetle Cat series. It had not been awarded for several years and is now for awarded to midweek winning Bettle Cat sailors.

TOMLINSON TROPHY: Ladies Series

In 1980 the daughters of Nancy K. Tomlinson donated the Tomlinson Trophy in memory of their mother who, though not a sailor, had been active in the club for 20 years, on the dock, patrolling, and serving as Secretary and Jib Sheet editor. The Tomlinson Trophy is designated for the Ladies Series on Tuesdays.

MCCLENNEN BOWL: JUNIOR BEETLE CAT SERIES

In 1953, Commodore Alan McClennen offered a permanent trophy for a class in the children’s series. Six years later he presented the McClennen Bowl for the Saturday Beetle Cat Series. In 1975 the McClennen Bowl was designated for the Junior Beetle Series on Thursdays.

In 1993, Catherine Ryan presented the Ryan Trophy, in honor if the Ryan family, for the junior Sunfish Series.

THE ALICE JACOBSON RONTY AWARD: Adult Sailing 

Established in 2024, this award honors Alice Jacobson Ronty, first Fleet Captain of the 14’ Catboat Fleet and a founding instructor of the Adult Sailing Program at Chatham Yacht Club. As an outgrowth of her leadership and enthusiasm, 2023 saw the first Adult Sailing students participating in C14s. This award goes to the highest placing Adult Sailing Program student in C14 races. In that absence of a C14 series student candidate, the Alice Jacobson Ronty Award may be presented for a racing series deemed appropriate by the Race Committee, with preference given to Adult Sailing Program racers or 14’ Catboats.

SATURDAY SERIES


PRESIDENT'S CUP BAYBIRD SERIES:


The President’s Cup was presented in 1921 by G. Herbert Windeler, Esq, president of the Chatham Country Club, “to represent the championship of the Baybirds”. A series of five races was called the President’s Cup Races. In 1975 the “Chatham Yacht designated the President’s Cup for the Saturday Daysailer Series.

COMMODORE'S CUP BEETLECAT SERIES:

The Commodore’s Cup was donated in 1927 to the newly formed Pleasant Bay Yachting Club (renamed the Chatham Yacht Club the following season) by its commodore Edward F. McClennen for the Baybird class. In 1975 the Club designated the Commodore’s Cup for the Saturday Beetle Cat Series.

WALTON TROPHY SUNFISH SERIES

The Nancy Walton Trophy was donated by the Sunfish fleet in honor of their former racing companion and club secretary following her death in 1971. The Walton Trophy is designated for the Saturday Sunfish Series.

COMMODORE WILLIAM A. DICKSON PERPETUAL TROPHY: MARSHALL CAT SERIES

Commodore William Dickson donated the Dickson Catboat Champion Trophy in 1981 for the Marshall Cat Saturday Series, with the stipulation that the winner provide a “meat” dinner to all previous winners. The 14 foot Catboats have now replaced Marshall Cat’s as the racing boat.

Deed:

“To be awarded to the winning Catboat for each racing season as determined by the Directors of the Chatham Yacht Club. The trophy shall be polished and turned over to the new winner who shall have his name engraved thereupon. The winner must provide a proper meat dinner for all the preceding winners.”

SUMMERS BOWL: 420 SERIES

The children of L. Colin Summers, who had spent many hours starting, timing, and finishing races, donated the Summers Bowl in 1960. Noting the family’s more than 20 years of racing at the club, they designated the trophy for the new Daysailer class. In 1992 the Summers Bowl was transferred to the 420 Saturday Series.

CLARY BOWL: SATURDAY OPTIMIST DINGHY SERIES

In 1967 Bill Clary, an adult racer and frequent winner of the Saturday Beetle Cat series, presented the Clary Bowl, to be given to the junior placing first in the series. In 1975, when juniors were consistently winning the Saturday Beetle Cat Series, the Clary Bowl was transferred to the Tuesday Beetle Cat Series. In 1999 the trophy was transferred to the Saturday Optimist series so that a junior would always win it.
