Sailing School Picnic - SUNDAY!

RSVP for the Regatta Dinner - Now!

The CYC season is in full swing!  Please read below for important updates from the SAILING SCHOOl, RACE COMMITTEE, SOCIAL & VOLUNTEER COMMITTEES.

If you use the clubhouse, the CYC grounds, have sailors in the program or sail yourself- we need your help to keep the club running and our overhead low.  Without volunteers, we will be forced to either cancel activities or increase our dues to make up the difference.  Please patrol, participate on a committee, serve as parent on duty, captain an event.  We train and all positions come with waterviews! Visit the Volunteer Page to learn more!

SAILING SCHOOL

Hello CYC Families!

A note about Sailing School races: Sailing school races take place every Wednesday and Thursday immediately following class. These races are an integral part of the curriculum, and all students are expected to participate. Please remember to pack a lunch to eat during the break between class and the start of the races.

The sailing school has a busy and exciting schedule ahead. Please mark your calendars for these upcoming events:

SAILING SCHOOL PICNIC

Sunday, July 19 @ 5:00 PM

Join us for a fun evening with friends! Please bring your own items for the grill.

BEACH DAY!

Sunday, July 26

Meet us at Jack Knife to enjoy a relaxing day in the sun and sand. Watch for further details.

REGATTA SEASON The Gill Regatta and the CYC Regatta are fast approaching. Start preparing your schedules now—we look forward to seeing our sailors compete!

Our morning classes run from 9:00-12:00 on Monday, Tuesday, and Friday. On Wednesday and Thursday we have our sailing school races, so please pack a lunch and stop by if you want to watch. Classes will end at 1:30 pm on those days. Please allow for some variability in our pick-up times. The sailors are responsible for putting away their own boats, so classes can run a little longer sometimes.

Work Hard, Be Kind: Award Winners

We are two weeks into our "Work Hard, Be Kind" program and are thrilled to announce our first two winners. This award honors the memory of John W. Hughan, a beloved member of our club known for his caring spirit and for always going above and beyond for others.   It is presented to sailors who demonstrate exceptional kindness, respect, and perseverance.

Lilly Klein: Recognized for her consistently positive attitude and her eagerness to help fellow sailors and instructors.

Violet Canon: Selected for her incredible perseverance and for staying upbeat even during the intensity of sailing school races.

Safety and Preparation Reminders

To ensure every student has a fabulous and successful day on the water, please remember the following requirements:

Life Jackets: Mandatory at all times.

Footwear: Closed-toe shoes are highly recommended for safety.

Sun Protection: Please apply sunscreen before arrival and send extra for reapplication.

Helping your student arrive prepared with these supplies ensures they can focus on having fun and staying safe.

Thank you for a great season so far!

The CYC Sailing School Team

CYC STAFF

Our staff is the foundation of our program. This year, we have a mixture of returning and new staff. These instructors are racing enthusiasts, sportsmanlike competitors, and passionate teachers. They are a truly inspirational group for younger sailors to learn from.

CYC Regatta (August 1st & 2nd) Shifts have been added to the volunteer calendarSign up now to get your preferred shift!

Volunteering at CYC comes with a water view!

Our CYC activities and events depend on your vounteer efforts.

We are still in need of volunteers for patrol and the dock committee during races.

Signing up is easy.  Simply visit the VOLUNTEER CALENDAR and select the event on the date of your choice.  This will take you to an event 'registration' page where you can learn more about the shift or needs.  Once you sign up, you will receive a confirmation email as well as reminder emails as your shift date nears.  (Parent-On-Duty sailing school parents, secure your favored spot now!)

Because these sign ups are structured within our "EVENTS" system (similar to RSVP's for social events) - you have the ability to view all registrations on your profile page.  These include Sailing School registrations, Social RSVP's and now Volunteer sign ups.  Amazing!

There's an app for that!

Wild Apricot (our web host) has a MEMBER APP AVAILABLE TO DOWNLOAD  On this app you can view our member directory, register for events, view your "tickets" (all events and registrations), add events to your device calendar, view and edit your profile - and likely more capabilities that we have not yet discovered!

As of yet, we do not have the ability to change the App 'album cover' and it remains the Wild Apricot orange logo.

We are still in need of volunteers for patrol and the dock committee during races.  No experience necessary!

PATROL

CYC has a tradition of the powerboat patrol which keep our sailors safe while racing, and we thank those who volunteer year after year.

No prior experience is necessary. Training and guidance will be provided to anyone new to these roles, and experienced volunteers will be happy to help you get started.

If your child or children race in the CYC races on a regular or semi-regular basis, we need you to please volunteer a few times this summer to serve as the driver of or a passenger on a patrol boat.  It doesn’t matter if you have a boat or not, as we have the CYC powerboats for use, and it doesn’t matter if you’re comfortable on a boat or not, as we can teach you.  In addition to helping to keep our kids safe, serving on a patrol boat is a great way to see your kids sail up-close!

Following is the racing schedule so you can have a sense for the time commitment involved on any particular day:

  • Tuesdays: Two races, 1:00pm – 4:00pm (approximately)
  • Wednesdays: One race, 2:00pm – 4:00pm (approximately)
  • Saturdays: Two races, 1:00pm – 4:00pm (approximately)
  • Chatham Regatta (August 3 – 4): 9:00am – 12:00pm (Saturday and Sunday) and 1:00pm – 4:00pm (Saturday only)

To assure you, patrolling is straightforward and does not require experience.  Quite simply, we need to make sure all the boats that go out for a race return to shore.  If you have any questions or concerns about patrolling, please contact RICK BARNARD (BarnardRick@gmail.com)  or 413-531-4775

MEMBERSHIP

Message from the Membership Committee:

If you haven't renewed your CYC membership for the 2026 season yet, we kindly ask that you do so THIS WEEK. Renewing your membership helps ensure that our club reflects those who are actively participating this season and keeps everyone connected.

Over the next week, our Membership Committee will be reaching out to members with lapsed memberships to offer assistance if you've had any trouble completing your renewal.

As a reminder, because of how our registration system works, members who have not renewed will not appear in the CYC member directory, and their contact information will not be available to other members.

If you're experiencing any issues with renewing your membership, please contact Heather Wesp at heatherwespcyc@gmail.com—she'll be happy to help.

5 Quick Questions

Getting your boat to CYC:

No boats or sailboards may be carried over the hill to be launched at CYC.

Launching may take place at Jack Knife Harbor, the Town Landing on Crow's Pond, Ryder's Cove or in Round Cove. Please pay attention to any permitting needs for launching any boat.

Transportation of 420s and Optis over the hill for the purpose of attending regattas during the summer may occur ONLY before sunrise and after sunset per our lease with Eastward Ho! (If you have purchased an Opti for your sailor and are depositing or removing your Opti for the season, these same Eastward Ho! requirements apply.)

Thank you in advance for your cooperation!

PARKING & SAFETY

CYC Parking

The parking lot configuration allows for multi-directional Fox Hill Road access from three points as illustrated in the diagram below. It is essential that all CYC traffic use the third entrance on Fox Hill road to minimize the access traffic and pedestrian hazards in the other parts of the parking area.

Sailing School morning classes

CYC instructors will be available to help students to and from the CYC club house so parents can enjoy the convenience of “drop and go” noted by the yellow cross-hash area.

Before 11:30 am, parking may be available on a first-come, first-serve basis in the designated area, highlighted in green box, for parents to bring their children to classes, meet the instructors and fellow parents. Please be aware this area is not exclusive to CYC but shared with EHCC. If there is a shortage of parking spaces in the designated area, please park on the shoulder of Fox Hill Rd.

Pickup and go” will also be available for your convenience at the conclusion of morning classes at the Pick-up spot shown in the diagram. This is a safer and shaded location where our students can be ready for pick-up.  Please be mindful of cars who need to get around you while you are waiting.

Mid-day

Parking begins to get busy around 11:30 when Eastward Ho! Lunch service begins. After 11:30, We ask that CYC members park on the Fox Hill road shoulder during lunch if the CYC area is busy.

Afternoon classes and races

Due to the limited amount of parking spaces, Parents are encouraged to enjoy the convenience of “drop and go” where appropriate for the children. Parents who would like to see your kids in action during the afternoon races can check for available parking spots in the designated (green) area after 2 PM. If there is a shortage of parking spaces at any time, please park on the shoulder of Fox Hill Rd.

Eastward Ho! will have parking lot attendants available to assist with traffic flow and direct CYC members to the designated (green) area. Please don’t hesitate to speak with them if you have any questions or need assistance.

As always, safety is paramount as we balance convenience and consideration for a shared parking resource with our friends at Eastward Ho!

Thank you for your cooperation as we begin a new exciting season at CYC!                                                                                            Top

Courtesy & Safety on the Golf Course

An average golf ball leaves the tee traveling 115 mph or more, and our path to CYC takes us right in front of the first tee. ADULTS & CHILDREN NEED TO TAKE CARE AS THEY CROSS IN FRONT.

  • Eastward Ho! has provided a fence to protect us.
  • CYC members should STOP at the edge of the fence, LOOK and ASSESS the situation.
  • Always wait while golfers are teeing off, but if the golfers are waiting, they may signal it is safe to cross.
  • Be aware as you approach the ninth green as well, since it is just beyond our path.

Eastward Ho! and CYC have a great working relationship, but it depends on CYC members being courteous to and respectful of the golfers.  Please wear shirts and shoes when crossing the hill, and do not use your cell phone.  It is best to be quiet when golfers are on the 9th green.  You may stop and wait, or move quietly by,  but try not to distract those focusing on their putts.
