S P I N S H E E T

July 25, 2025

Our Social Committees had a very busy week with the Sailing School Picnic last Friday followed by the CYC Beach day on Sunday and Ladies Happy Hour on Tuesday. THANK YOU to Emily Donnan, Margaret Graupe, Courtney Polhemus, Dana Murphy and Regina Winslow for serving as event captains.  THANK YOU to all silent volunteers who have shared their time, talents and donations to allow these events to take place. (photos can be viewed below)

CYC is hosting the 2025 (& 2026) GILL TROPHY this Wednesday & Thursday.  This regatta was first sailed in 1994 and is the only stand alone female (ages 13-18) regatta in the SMSA region.  Come out and support the legacy of CYC and the GILL trophy this week!

Previous winners of the GILL trophy include the teams of Cailyn Murphy / Amelia Gassner who won back to back trophies in 2022 & 2023 with Julia Scipione / Sophie Dart placing 2nd in 2024 &2023.  Scrolling back, our own Margaret Sampson Graupe and Molly Koch Bechtel dominated the 2001 trophy

We are in need of a few volunteer spots and appreciate any help you can provide:

PARKING attendants Wednesday afternoon 3-5 and Thursday 830-1030 am or 3-5 pm.

Parking at CYC / Eastward Ho is not permitted for the regatta and we are offering shuttles from the Monomoy middle school to CYC during  the morning and afternoon peak times.

DINNER HOSTS Wednesday and Thursday approximately 3-5.  CYC is providing simple post race dinners and we are seeking volunteers to assist with the set up and serving.

Please feel free to email Tracy commodorecyc.ma@gmail.com with questions! Google sheet to volunteer  THANK YOU!

NEW GEAR is available in the Clubhouse Honor Shop!  Visit the CYC Gear portion of the Spinsheet for sneak peeks of the new goods from Snazzy hats, collared polos and emblazoned cutting boards.

In RACING news, this Tuesday the Race committee will try one more time to make up the earlier races that were canceled.  Please see below for details and your latest Racing Quiz.

The CYC Regatta is NEXT weekend.  Please watch for an email this week with very important information on parking, access to CYC and shoreside protocols.   Regatta Pre-Registration is REQUIRED for all sailors

WE NEED VOLUNTEERS

Every year we magically pull off the longest running FREE regatta on the Cape with YOUR HELP.   These are the spots showing as 'OPEN' on our Volunteer Scheduling Program and as you will see, there are a lot!  Please take a moment to see where you can provide support.  Thank you.

If you use the clubhouse, the CYC grounds, have sailors in the program or sail yourself- we need your help to keep the club running and our overhead low.  Without volunteers, we will be forced to either cancel activities or increase our dues to make up the difference.  Please patrol, participate on a committee, serve as parent on duty, captain an event.  We train and all positions come with waterviews!

Sailing School

The annual Sailing School Picnic was held last Friday evening featuring the traditional instructor vs student tug-of-war, smores and a glorious sunset.  It's moments like these that keep us returning to our happy place.  Thank you to all of the parent volunteers, instructors and Schuyler for keeping this annual tradition alive!

KARAOKE NIGHT IS BACK!

Kids Karaoke returns for one night only

THIS Tuesday, July 29th.

To make this event enjoyable and safe for everyone, we are seeking volunteers to bring snacks and juice boxes for the kids (no cans or soda please.  You can also send your child with a refillable water bottle!)

If you are interested in helping out, please let Jenn Gilmartin or Schuyler Bartlett know.

Volunteers are needed!  CYC is hosting the 2025 & 2026 GILL Trophy regatta.  First sailed in 1994, The Southern Mass Sailing Association Junior girls Championship is a stand alone regatta for female sailors age 13-18 years old.  Volunteer here

Our staff is the foundation of our program. This year, we have a mixture of returning and new staff.  The 2025 instructors are racing enthusiasts, sportsmanlike competitors, and passionate teachers. They are a truly inspirational group for younger sailors to learn from.

Meet your staff!

Getting your boat to CYC:

No boats or sailboards may be carried over the hill to be launched at CYC.

Launching may take place at Jack Knife Harbor, the Town Landing on Crow's Pond, Ryder's Cove or in Round Cove. Please pay attention to any permitting needs for launching any boat.

Transportation of 420s and Optis over the hill for the purpose of attending regattas during the summer may occur ONLY before sunrise and after sunset per our lease with Eastward Ho! (If you have purchased an Opti for your sailor and are depositing or removing your Opti for the season, these same Eastward Ho! requirements apply.)

Thank you in advance for your cooperation!

Please see the  Sailing School Overview page for detailed information on: The Weekly Schedule, Parking & Drop Off Guidelines, What to Bring to Sailing School and much, much more!

Our Summer 2025 staff will build on CYC’s reputation as a yacht club valuing sportsmanship, competition, and learning. Every student has a place in our program. We hope that they will leave sailing school each day having learned something.

QUIZ #4 (34)

(answers are located at the bottom of the spinsheet)

 p a t r o l

CYC has a tradition of the powerboat patrol which keep our sailors safe while racing, and we thank those who volunteer year after year.

If your child or children race in the CYC races on a regular or semi-regular basis, we need you to please volunteer a few times this summer to serve as the driver of or a passenger on a patrol boat.  It doesn’t matter if you have a boat or not, as we have the CYC powerboats for use, and it doesn’t matter if you’re comfortable on a boat or not, as we can teach you.  In addition to helping to keep our kids safe, serving on a patrol boat is a great way to see your kids sail up-close!

Following is the racing schedule so you can have a sense for the time commitment involved on any particular day:

  • Tuesdays: Two races, 1:00pm – 4:00pm (approximately)
  • Wednesdays: One race, 2:00pm – 4:00pm (approximately)
  • Saturdays: Two races, 1:00pm – 4:00pm (approximately)
  • Chatham Regatta (August 3 – 4): 9:00am – 12:00pm (Saturday and Sunday) and 1:00pm – 4:00pm (Saturday only)

To assure you, patrolling is straightforward and does not require experience.  Quite simply, we need to make sure all the boats that go out for a race return to shore.  If you have any questions or concerns about patrolling, please contact Mike Szymanski at any time (cell: 201-320-3270 or e-mail: mfszy1@gmail.com) or Andrew Caggiano  (cell: 781-690-4711 or e-mail: andycagg@gmail.com

CYC ONLY FUNCTIONS WITH YOUR HELPING HANDS!

We need your help.

In order to keep children safe, the costs affordable as well as maintain the community culture of Chatham Yacht Club, CYC relies on ALL members to volunteer in order to get everything done. This also a great way to get to know old and new CYC members.

Where else does volunteering come with a water view?

CYC runs on volunteerism and we are in need of volunteers this year across multiple areas, including patrolling the CYC races, serving as a parent-on-duty at the Sailing School, and assisting with the annual CYC Regatta.

Thank you to those who have volunteered this season already!

Members with sailing school participants should sign up for at least one Parent on Duty slot  per child enrolled in Sailing School, two race day slots (refreshments, patrol, dock committee, or race scoring), and at least one Regatta donation and one social slot per child in Sailing School.

The volunteer scheduling program called Volunteer Scheduler Pro allows for volunteers to easily sign up, find substitutes and receive reminders!

Begin by enrolling to volunteer HERE

Make sure to select all Jobs you qualify for (ie, parent on duty, race patrol, regatta, etc or you may not see all the appropriate sign up slots)

A quick tutorial on Volunteer Scheduler Pro is available HERE

The mobile app is available on the app store. Questions can be directed to Alicia Downs at awdd@downsfive.com 917-623-3819 or Sarah Lipson sarahmlipson@gmail.com 646-283-4209.                                                                                                      Top

CYC Parking

The parking lot configuration allows for multi-directional Fox Hill Road access from three points as illustrated in the diagram below. It is essential that all CYC traffic use the third entrance on Fox Hill road to minimize the access traffic and pedestrian hazards in the other parts of the parking area.

The added parking has improved parking but we, EHCC and CYC, need to continue to optimize on the available parking with the following actions;

Sailing School morning classes

CYC instructors will be available to help students to and from the CYC club house so parents can enjoy the convenience of “drop and go” noted by the yellow cross-hash area. Before 11:30 am, parking may be available on a first-come, first-serve basis in the designated area, highlighted in green box, for parents to bring their children to classes, meet the instructors and fellow parents. Please be aware this area is not exclusive to CYC but shared with EHCC. If there is a shortage of parking spaces in the designated area, please park on the shoulder of Fox Hill Rd. “Pickup and go” will also be available for your convenience at the conclusion of morning classes at the Pick-up spot shown in the diagram. This is a safer and shaded location where our students can be ready for pick-up.

Mid-day

Parking begins to get busy around 11:30 when Eastward Ho! Lunch service begins. After 11:30, We ask that CYC members park on the Fox Hill road shoulder during lunch if the north lot is busy.

Afternoon classes and races

Due to the limited amount of parking spaces, Parents are encouraged to enjoy the convenience of “drop and go” where appropriate for the children. Parents who would like to see your kids in action during the afternoon races can check for available parking spots in the designated (green) area after 2 PM. If there is a shortage of parking spaces at any time, please park on the shoulder of Fox Hill Rd.

Eastward Ho! will have parking lot attendants available to assist with traffic flow and direct CYC members to the designated (green) area. Please don’t hesitate to speak with them if you have any questions or need assistance.

As always, safety is paramount as we balance convenience and consideration for a shared parking resource with our friends at Eastward Ho!

Thank you for your cooperation as we begin a new exciting season at CYC!

Courtesy & Safety on the Golf Course

An average golf ball leaves the tee traveling 115 mph or more, and our path to CYC takes us right in front of the first tee. ADULTS & CHILDREN NEED TO TAKE CARE AS THEY CROSS IN FRONT.

  • Eastward Ho! has provided a fence to protect us.
  • CYC members should STOP at the edge of the fence, LOOK and ASSESS the situation.
  • Always wait while golfers are teeing off, but if the golfers are waiting, they may signal it is safe to cross.
  • Be aware as you approach the ninth green as well, since it is just beyond our path.

Eastward Ho! and CYC have a great working relationship, but it depends on CYC members being courteous to and respectful of the golfers.  Please wear shirts and shoes when crossing the hill, and do not use your cell phone.  It is best to be quiet when golfers are on the 9th green.  You may stop and wait, or move quietly by, but try not to distract those focusing on their putts.

SUNFISH OWNERS

If you have any sunfish parts located at CYC, please ensure you have your names on them.  We will be moving things around and parts without names might be lost.  Thank you!

Trophy Engraving & Return

We are asking trophy holders to return them to the Clubhouse early this season so they can be displayed for everyone to see!

Reminder - If you won one of the CYC Awards or Season Series trophies last year, you are responsible for getting your name engraved onto the trophy.

Try CCI Engraving at 474 Station Ave, South Yarmouth - take old Exit 8 and go South - it will be in a shopping area on the left (across the parking lot from Marathon Sports). Their phone number is 508-398-4433. There is a one-time set-up charge of $25 for each trophy, but once it is in his system the same trophy can be engraved each year without that additional charge. - Thank you!

Do you have basic Google spreadsheet skills?  Curious about racing and scoring? Great!  We can use your assistance and will teach you all you want to know about racing and scoring.  Please contact Ann Carson or Michael Klepikov for all of the fascinating information.
