MIDSUMMER LUNCHEON Thank you to Amber Caggiano,  Jennifer Gilmartin and Courtney Bishop for pulling together a delightful and elegant luncheon at Eastward Ho!  From the floral centerpieces, printed place cards, ice breaker game and  surprise giveaway, the luncheon was a huge success! Further thanks to Tracy & Dan Dart for serving as our official hosts of the event.  We can't wait until next year's line up!  Scroll below for event photos.

CYC BEACH DAY  volunteer needed.  Sunday, July 21st  we hope to gather on Outer Beach for a day of sunshine, fun and fingers crossed, minimal wind.  We need a volunteer to spearhead the coordination of staking our claim in the sand and helping to facilitate non boat owners making their way to the beach.  We were unsuccessful finding a volunteer to assist, so we have changed course.  CYC Beach Day has been moved from gathering at the Outer Beach, to gathering on the shore of Pleasant Bay at our own CYC beach area.  Details are developing, please watch for a separate email with updates.

DSNAC take place this week 24th-27th on Pleasant Bay.  CYC is co-hosting with PBCB, Orleans YC and Stage Harbor YC.  Come to the clubhouse to catch views from the deck or take your boat and watch from the water.   CYC schedules remain unchanged with our normal parking rules in place.   For more details, please see the web page under "Events".

Have a great week!

ADULT SAILING - HOG ISLAND!

According to the tide chart, high tide will be at 3:15pm on Monday 7/22 which makes it the perfect day to do our annual sail to Hog Island! For those of you new to the program we like to sail up into Little Pleasant Bay and then through the "river" in the marsh behind Hog Island that is navigable at high tide. There is a nice beach that we land on and have our refreshments there. There is always a spirited discussion about whether we go through the river eastward or westward. We will decide that day based on the wind direction.

To make sure that we don't leave anyone behind, please take a moment to fill out this form to let us know if you can come and if you can make it by 1:30. If you can't make it until 2pm, we can ferry you out to a boat enroute.

See you Monday

CYC 2024 Regatta Gear is now available for pre-order!

Pre-Order

Getting your boat to CYC:

No boats or sailboards may be carried over the hill to be launched at CYC.

Launching may take place at Jack Knife Harbor, the Town Landing on Crow's Pond, Ryder's Cove or in Round Cove. Please pay attention to any permitting needs for launching any boat.

Transportation of 420s and Optis over the hill for the purpose of attending regattas during the summer may occur ONLY before sunrise and after sunset per our lease with Eastward Ho! (If you have purchased an Opti for your sailor and are depositing or removing your Opti for the season, these same Eastward Ho! requirements apply.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation!

VOLUNTEER CORNER

CYC ONLY FUNCTIONS WITH YOUR HELPING HANDS!

CYC maintains it's ability to provide an accessible membership and sailing program through it's spirit of volunteerism.   Volunteers are the fabric of our community and allow us to offer social programming (and is a great way to meet other members!).

We need your help.

In order to keep children safe, the costs affordable as well as maintain the community culture of Chatham Yacht Club, CYC relies on ALL members to volunteer in order to get everything done. This also a great way to get to know old and new CYC members.

Thank you to everyone who has signed up or volunteered their time so far in all capacities!  Just a reminder for those with children in sailing school, please sign up for one or more parent on duty, one or more race snack and one or more regatta item per sailing school student.

The volunteer scheduling program called Volunteer Scheduler Pro allows for volunteers to easily sign up, find substitutes and receive reminders!

Begin by enrolling to volunteer HERE

Make sure to select all Jobs you qualify for (ie, parent on duty, race patrol, regatta, etc or you may not see all the appropriate sign up slots)

A quick tutorial on Volunteer Scheduler Pro is available HERE

The mobile app is available on the app store. Questions can be directed to Alicia Downs at awdd@downsfive.com 917-623-3819 or Sarah Lipson sarahmlipson@gmail.com 646-283-4209.

We are in need of parent volunteers for a few SAILING SCHOOL spots:

WHERE WE NEED YOUR HELP (IT COMES WITH A WATERVIEW!)

We need registrants for "Parent on Duty" and race day refreshments.

Parent on Duty:  Whistle while you work!   It's a great way to see what happens at the clubhouse and see your child sail. There are simple tasks that help us to stay organized and tidy.  Most importantly, it is a safety feature.  A parent at the clubhouse can provide support to the instructors while they are on the water and be available when a child is in need.

Race Day Refreshments:  Race Day volunteer needs include refreshments: Bringing and serving snacks after races. Sailors and racers alike look forward to refreshments when they come off the water after racing and are disappointed when there are non available.

Please see the Volunteer page to get started.  If you have any volunteer questions, please contact fellow parents : Alicia Downs at awdd@downsfive.com 917-623-3819 or Sarah Lipson sarahmlipson@gmail.com 646-283-4209.

Please reach out to me or your child’s instructor if you have any questions. Let’s go sailing!

Schuyler

We are in need of members to volunteer for the opportunities below:

CYC Beach Day volunteer needed. August 11  The first gathering was canceled with no one to take the helm.  We would like to try again in August  to gather on Outer Beach for a day of sunshine, fun and fingers crossed, minimal wind.  We need a volunteer to spearhead the coordination of staking our claim in the sand and helping to facilitate non boat owners making their way to the beach.

Sailing School Karaoke   Back by popular demand, Sailing School Karaoke night  July 30!  We are seeking 2 parents to "keep watch" to ensure the kids do not overrule the staff members and also do not enter the waters or the dock.

Patrol is a vital part of the sailing experience at CYC.  NO EXPERIENCE IS NECESSARY - all one needs to know is who to radio if assistance is needed.  If you like spending time on the water and watching your child (or adult) sail - this is a front row seat.  If you don't have a boat but are willing to lend your eyes and ears - we can use you!  Please contact Mike Szymanski or Andy Caggiano to volunteer or to learn more.   In addition to CYC regatta there are weekly patrol opportunities.

Race patrol sign ups can be found on the Volunteer Scheduler website. (hints on using the site can be found below)

CYC Annual Regatta without your help, we can not maintain our tradition of hosting the annual free regatta and regatta dinner.

  • Regatta Parking  (multiple shifts)
  • Regatta Refreshments / Supplies (many openings on both days)
  • Breakfast SetUp (Saturday & Sunday)
  • Afternoon Clean Up (Saturday & Sunday)
  • Commodore's Dinner Set Up (morning & afternoon opportunities)
  • Commodore's Dinner Clean Up

To sign up, Log in to the Volunteer Scheduler Website

  • The sign ups are organized by week
  • Scroll down the page to find the week labeled : July 29-August 3
  • Follow the day in the left column until you find Friday, Saturday etc.
  • Look / scroll "right" until you find the 'volunteer now' button.

Below are a few other events tentatively on the schedule where we need a Captain to take the helm and assist with logistics and volunteers.

Evening Sail & Raft Up, July 29:   Gather at CYC and on Pleasant Bay to enjoy the sunset and sundowners.

Last Hurrah cocktails, August 16.  The final social gathering of the season before the club closes.

CYC Parking

The parking lot configuration allows for multi-directional Fox Hill Road access from three points as illustrated in the diagram below. It is essential that all CYC traffic use the third entrance on Fox Hill road to minimize the access traffic and pedestrian hazards in the other parts of the parking area.

The added parking has improved parking but we, EHCC and CYC, need to continue to optimize on the available parking with the following actions;

Sailing School morning classes

CYC instructors will be available to help students to and from the CYC club house so parents can enjoy the convenience of “drop and go” noted by the yellow cross-hash area. Before 11:30 am, parking may be available on a first-come, first-serve basis in the designated area, highlighted in green box, for parents to bring their children to classes, meet the instructors and fellow parents. Please be aware this area is not exclusive to CYC but shared with EHCC. If there is a shortage of parking spaces in the designated area, please park on the shoulder of Fox Hill Rd. “Pickup and go” will also be available for your convenience at the conclusion of morning classes at the Pick-up spot shown in the diagram. This is a safer and shaded location where our students can be ready for pick-up.

Mid-day

Parking begins to get busy around 11:30 when Eastward Ho! Lunch service begins. After 11:30, We ask that CYC members park on the Fox Hill road shoulder during lunch if the north lot is busy.

Afternoon classes and races

Due to the limited amount of parking spaces, Parents are encouraged to enjoy the convenience of “drop and go” where appropriate for the children. Parents who would like to see your kids in action during the afternoon races can check for available parking spots in the designated (green) area after 2 PM. If there is a shortage of parking spaces at any time, please park on the shoulder of Fox Hill Rd.

Eastward Ho! will have parking lot attendants available to assist with traffic flow and direct CYC members to the designated (green) area. Please don’t hesitate to speak with them if you have any questions or need assistance.

As always, safety is paramount as we balance convenience and consideration for a shared parking resource with our friends at Eastward Ho!

Thank you for your cooperation as we begin a new exciting season at CYC!

Courtesy and Safety on the Golf Course

An average golf ball leaves the tee traveling 115 mph or more, and our path to CYC takes us right in front of the first tee. Adults and children need to take care as they cross in front.  Eastward Ho! has provided a fence to protect us.  CYC members should stop at the edge of the fence, look and assess the situation.  Always wait while golfers are teeing off, but if the golfers are waiting, they may signal it is safe to cross. Be aware as you approach the ninth green as well, since it is just beyond our path.

Eastward Ho! and CYC have a great working relationship, but it depends on CYC members being courteous to and respectful of the golfers.  Please wear shirts and shoes when crossing the hill, and do not use your cell phone.  It is best to be quiet when golfers are on the 9th green.  You may stop and wait, or move quietly by, but try not to distract those focusing on their putts.

CYC is hosting the Day Sailer North American Championships in July!

Day Sailer Fleet 34 Chatham YC, Fleet 15 Orleans YC, Fleet 18 Stage Harbor YC, and Pleasant Bay Community Boating will be hosting the Day Sailer North American Championships July 22-27 on Pleasant Bay on Cape Cod in Massachusetts. This will be the 4th DSNACs hosted on this beautiful body of water – we previously hosted very successful regattas in 1979, 1985, and 2015.

Boats will be weighed and measured at Monomoy Middle School, launched at Ryder’s Cove and towed to CYC on Monday, July 22 and Tuesday, July 23. The Junior Championship will be sailed on Wednesday, July 24 (for this event Junior means the skipper and is defined as 26 and under). The actual Championship regatta will be sailed July 25 - July 27 (finishing at lunch on the 27th).

This event is being planned to have a minimal impact on CYC’s daily schedule. Most of the CYC volunteers helping to run the event will be families who own Day Sailers. We would welcome anyone else who would like to help with breakfast or lunch or weighing and measuring, or towing, or patrolling, or ferrying sailors to and from their boats, etc. Please contact Ted Dickson if you would like to help on or off the water.

Calling all Beetle Cat sailors!

Mark your calendars for Saturday and Sunday, August 10 & 11, 2024, as our neighbor Wianno Yacht Club (Osterville, MA) is hosting the annual Leo J. Telesmanick Championship this summer. This is a great way to connect with other Beetle Cat sailors in the New England region. Launching is easy (right at the club), moorings are available (also at the club) and trailer storage is a stone's throw away. Saturday evening NEBCBA (New England Beetle Cat Boat Association) will hold its annual meeting, followed by a clambake dinner. For further questions, please contact Cathy Taylor @ CathyE43@gmail.com.

I look forward to seeing you all on “our” Bay!

Cathy Taylor

TROPHIES

Trophy Engraving & Return

We are asking trophy holders to return them to the Clubhouse early this season so they can be displayed for everyone to see!

Reminder - If you won one of the CYC Awards or Season Series trophies last year, you are responsible for getting your name engraved onto the trophy.

Try CCI Engraving at 474 Station Ave, South Yarmouth - take old Exit 8 and go South - it will be in a shopping area on the left (across the parking lot from Marathon Sports). Their phone number is 508-398-4433. There is a one-time set-up charge of $25 for each trophy, but once it is in his system the same trophy can be engraved each year without that additional charge.

Thank you!

PATROL

CYC has a tradition of the CYC has a tradition of powerboat patrol which keep our sailors (children and adult) safe while racing, and we thank those who volunteer year after year.

If your child or children race in the CYC races on a regular or semi-regular basis, we need you to please volunteer a few times this summer to serve as the driver of or a passenger on a patrol boat.  It doesn’t matter if you have a boat or not, as we have the CYC powerboats for use, and it doesn’t matter if you’re comfortable on a boat or not, as we can teach you.  In addition to helping to keep our kids safe, serving on a patrol boat is a great way to see your kids sail up-close.

Following is the racing schedule so you can have a sense for the time commitment involved:

Tuesdays: Two races, 1:00pm – 4:00pm (approximately)

Wednesdays: One race, 2:00pm – 4:00pm (approximately)

Saturdays: Two races, 1:00pm – 4:00pm (approximately)

Chatham Regatta (August 3 – 4): 9:00am – 12:00pm (Saturday and Sunday) and 1:00pm – 4:00pm (Saturday only)

To assure you, patrolling is straightforward and does not require experience.  Quite simply, we need to make sure all the boats that go out for a race return to shore.  If you have any questions or concerns about patrolling, please contact Mike Szymanski at any time (cell: 201-320-3270 or e-mail: mfszy1@gmail.com) or Andrew Caggiano  (cell: 781-690-4711 or e-mail: andycagg@gmail.com

Thank you!

CYC Scuttlebutt

"SALE-ING" Skills needed:  Part of CYC's operation depends on rotating older boats, motors and parts out of inventory to make way (and funds) for new necessary items.  This requires facilitating the selling or donation of appropriate items.  We need someone to assist with this process.  For more information or to volunteer, please contact Bart Wesp (Bart.Wesp@gmail.com)

Recyling: Please look for recycling canisters in the clubhouse kitchen and around the property to help us be environmentally friendly.

Erosion: Please keep boats off of the beach grass.  The beach grass is our only protection from erosion!  Boats can be tied to the moorings on the beach.

Paddle Courts: Please do not store things up against the paddle courts.  The paddle courts are a separate entity and are also undergoing some construction work.

Volunteers: CYC runs on volunteerism and we are in need of volunteers this year across multiple areas, including patrolling the CYC races, serving as a parent-on-duty at the Sailing School, and assisting with the annual CYC Regatta. Learn more in the Volunteer section.
