July 14, 2023

We are well into our 102nd CYC season on Pleasant Bay and remain thankful for our members who volunteer their time and energy keeping us sailing smoothly.

A giant thank you to Amber CaggianoJennifer Gilmartin and the entire Social Committee for spearheading a fantastic Commodore's Cocktail evening.

Before we know it, it will be time for our 2023 CYC Regatta.  Information on the regatta and weekend events will be coming soon.  However NOW is the time to pre-order your 2023 Regatta Gear.  Pre-order cut off is July 17.  See below for more information.

Reminder, the annual meeting of the Friends of Pleasant Bay will be held on July 17.  Information below.

Stay tuned:  Christine deSilva, daughter of  members Michelle and  Peter, wil be on Discovery Channel's Shark Week July 24 (10PM) in a segment titled "Alien Sharks"Thankfully filmed in South Africa and not Cape Cod!

Do you have a Sunfish?

First the good news, our Sunfish class is very popular! Now the bad news, we are looking for more boats!

Due to the high demand, we are seeking Sunfish that might be lent to the club for use this summer.

If you happen to own a Sunfish or know someone who does, please consider lending it to the club for the summer. This would greatly help our Sunfish class!

PATROL

The racing season is just getting underway at CYC and, like every year, we need people to volunteer to patrol the races on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays to keep our sailors safe. If you have a power boat, can operate one of the CYC powerboats, or would just like to assist, please sign up to help patrol some of the races through the CYC volunteer website.

2023 Regatta Patrol times will be updated shortly on the volunteer website.

Six new beautiful Patrol flags have been added to the Patrol Flag bucket. The red bucket holding the Patrol flags is in the basement of the CYC Clubhouse, to the far right when facing the building. Please return the Patrol flags after each day.

As a friendly reminder, when patrolling, please try your best to stay well behind the fleet at the start, and please try to avoid creating a wake in front of the fleet at any time, including in the mooring fields as sailors are tying down their boats and awaiting a shuttle back to the dock.

To assure you, patrolling is straightforward and does not require experience.  Quite simply, we need to make sure all the boats that go out for a race return to shore.  If you have any questions or concerns about patrolling, please contact Mike Szymanski at any time (cell: 201-320-3270 or e-mail: mfszy1@gmail.com) or Marshall Bartlett  (617-548-0507  marshallbartlett@me.com).

BEETLECAT TELESMANICK

Ahoy Mateys!

I have just registered my Beetle Cat, Kit Kat, for the 2023 Leo J. Telesmanick Beetle Cat Championship BEETLE CAT REGATTA to be held August 11-13, 2023 at Bass River Yacht Club (South Yarmouth, MA)!  Natalie Coleman Fuller will skipper and I will be her trusty (or maybe crusty?) crew!

We would love to have CYC represented by more Beetles, as Bass River Yacht Club has moved the date of the championship to the weekend after our own CYC regatta to avoid a conflict for our Beetle Cat skippers!

Remember just two years ago at CYC when we hosted over 70 Beetle Cats on our starting line at CYC?  The more the merrier!

Keeper trophies will be given to the top three skippers in the following categories:  Overall, Junior (18 & under), Mens, Womens, Old Salts (50-69), and Ancient Mariners (70 and over) Divisions.  Please consider, as it is sure to be a great event!

For more information about this annual event and to register you, your crew and your Beetle Cat, please go to  TELESMANICK  or contact Cathy Taylor at CathyE43@gmail.com.

SAILING SCHOOL PICNIC

Next Friday, July 21st 5:30

COMMODORE'S COCKTAILS Thank you to all of our CYC members who joined us for a beautiful evening on the bay!  The new sign up for what to bring worked well.  Stay tuned for sign up formats for the Last Hurrah in August.

CYC ADULT GATHERINGS

22 CYC’ers enjoyed a perfect evening aboard the Pleasant Bay Community Boating floating classroom, the nation’s first solar powered educational 37 foot pontoon boat. Scientist Sarah Griscom engaged us with the origins of the boat, which was the inspiration of several Cape Cod organizations. We learned about the critical importance of the health of the bay, and how to measure and sample using technology and collecting sea life. The “Friend” floating classroom is an incredible asset right here on Pleasant Bay!

TROPHIES

Trophy Engraving & Return

We are asking trophy holders to return them to the Clubhouse early this season so they can be displayed for everyone to see!

Reminder - If you won one of the CYC Awards or Season Series trophies last year, you are responsible for getting your name engraved onto the trophy.

East Coast Engraving in Hyannis closed permanently last week (!). The best option now seems to be CCI Engraving at 474 Station Ave, South Yarmouth - take old Exit 8 and go South - it will be in a shopping area on the left (across the parking lot from Marathon Sports). Their phone number is 508-398-4433. There is a one-time set-up charge of $25 for each trophy, but once it is in his system the same trophy can be engraved each year without that additional charge.

Thank you!

New! Private and Semi-Private Rowing Lessons

Vintage Nautical Wood Boat Oars 3D model | CGTraderNew this summer! CYC sailor and junior instructor, Harrison Kintz, is offering private and semi-private rowing lessons for pre-sailors and young sailors (as well as sailor parents) on the club beach. The 45-minute lessons will introduce students to the basics of dinghy rowing—while building confidence around boats and the water. In addition to rowing instruction, lessons will teach students about the parts of a boat, rowboat safety, and simple knot tying. For more information, please contact Harrison Kintz at hkintz@stalbansschool.org or text Harrison at 703-298-0818. Alternatively, feel free to contact CYC parent, Liz Kintz, at 703-258-9021 or edonnankintz@gmail.com.

CYC Parking

The new parking lot configuration allows for multi-directional Fox Hill Road access from three points as illustrated in the diagram below. It is essential that all CYC traffic use the third entrance on Fox Hill road to minimize the access traffic and pedestrian hazards in the other parts of the parking area.

The added parking has improved parking but we, EHCC and CYC, need to continue to optimize on the available parking with the following actions;

Sailing School morning classes

CYC instructors will be available to help students to and from the CYC club house so parents can enjoy the convenience of “drop and go” noted by the yellow cross-hash area. Before 11:30 am, parking maybe available on a first-come, first-serve basis in the designated area, highlighted in green box, for parents to bring their children to classes, meet the instructors and fellow parents. Please be aware this area is not exclusive to CYC but shared with EHCC. If there is a shortage of parking spaces in the designated area, please park on the shoulder of Fox Hill Rd. “Pickup and go” will also be available for your convenience at the conclusion of morning classes at the Pick-up spot shown in the diagram. This is a safer and shaded location where our students can be ready for pick-up.

Mid-day

Parking begins to get busy around 11:30 when Eastward Ho! Lunch service begins. After 11:30, We ask that CYC members park on the Fox Hill road shoulder during lunch if the north lot is busy.

Afternoon classes and races

Due to the limited amount of parking spaces, Parents are encouraged to enjoy the convenience of “drop and go” where appropriate for the children. Parents who would like to see your kids in action during the afternoon races can check for available parking spots in the designated (green) area after 2 PM. If there is a shortage of parking spaces at any time, please park on the shoulder of Fox Hill Rd.

Eastward Ho! will have parking lot attendants available to assist with traffic flow and direct CYC members to the designated (green) area. Please don’t hesitate to speak with them if you have any questions or need assistance.

As always, safety is paramount as we balance convenience and consideration for a shared parking resource with our friends at Eastward Ho!

Thank you for your cooperation as we begin a new exciting season at CYC!

Courtesy and Safety on the Golf Course

An average golf ball leaves the tee traveling 115 mph or more, and our path to CYC takes us right in front of the first tee. Adults and children need to take care as they cross in front.  Eastward Ho! has provided a fence to protect us.  CYC members should stop at the edge of the fence, look and assess the situation.  Always wait while golfers are teeing off, but if the golfers are waiting, they may signal it is safe to cross. Be aware as you approach the ninth green as well, since it is just beyond our path.

Eastward Ho! and CYC have a great working relationship, but it depends on CYC members being courteous to and respectful of the golfers.  Please wear shirts and shoes when crossing the hill, and do not use your cell phone.  It is best to be quiet when golfers are on the 9th green.  You may stop and wait, or move quietly by, but try not to distract those focusing on their putts.
