Saturday, July 1 - 1:00pm:A single Series race followed by CYC Opening Meeting. Please note that all classes will start sequentially after 1:00pm with no second later start time. Tuesday, July 4 2:00pm: CYC July 4 Race. Please note that all classes will start sequentially after 2:00pm due to the Chatham Independence Day Parade in the morning. This will be a trophy race and not count toward a Series.
CYC Independence Day Strawberry Shortcake Social Please join us on Tuesday, July 4 following the CYC July 4th race for our Strawberry Shortcake Social. (Race begins at 2:00pm)
JOIN US IN THE PARADE ON Monday, July 4th Meet at the CYC float on Shore Road (towards the back, we are float #55 of 73, behind the Chatham Squire float in line) BY 9am am if not earlier. (Parade begins at 9:30 - See below with traffic guidance) We will be in position by 8:30 am for any early birds. Wear your Sailing School T-Shirt! And comfortable walking shoes. Bring: Water bottle and anything needed for the weather. Pick up : Monomoy Regional Middle School on Crowell Road* All kids 8 and under need to be accompanied by an adult to walk in the parade. All members, young and not so young, are invited to walk with us. Come celebrate Independence Day! The parade route ends at Crowell Road and Tip Cart Road - if your child is unaccompanied and not picked up at the end of the parade, then they will proceed to the Middle School. Parking & Shuttle: For entrants wishing to park at the Monomoy Regional Middle School, a shuttle bus will take you to Shore Road. This shuttle will run starting at 7am. The shuttle will run from the end of the parade back to the Monomoy Regional Middle School. Please adhere to police instructions for entering & exiting the parade area. Shore road closes at 6:30am and main street to shore road closes at 8:30. |
Off to the CYC Races! 
Eastward Ho! is fully subscribed for their annual July 4th celebration. Only members with a confirmed reservation may park in the parking lot. If you wish to watch the fireworks from the CYC beach, you may walk over the hill but must park along the street or elsewhere. The Chatham police will be onsite to help with any parking questions. • Please do not park in areas on Fox Hill Road that have been roped off by our Greens Department or the Police for safety reasons. It is a very busy night!
There is no CYC parking available after 4:30 pm on July 4th.
If you have a child who will be in sailing school for the FIRST TIME, please fill out a medical form (link below). This includes both new families and younger siblings. If you have a returning child, we will keep the old one so you do not need to fill it out again. Do you watch others sail and wish you could join them? CYC offers Adult Sailing classes both for beginners and for those who want to learn how to race. Join Adult Sailing on Monday afternoons and/or Saturday mornings. It is a great way to get to know other members better and to get out on the water. Monday classes are taught by other adults while Saturday classes are taught by our junior instructors. People are welcome to sign up for either or both if they would like extra practice. Registration is now active on the website and child (or pet) care will be available during Monday classes again this summer. New this year, student-only races! We will be holding separate races on Tuesdays for our adult sailing participants. And those students who race in our regular Saturday races will be scored separately. RACING CORNER From the Race Committee The Race Committee canceled last Tuesday’s races. The missed races will be made up as follows: Tuesday, July 11 Series 1 race make-up - the schedule that day will be Series 1, Series 1, Series 2 Tuesday, July 18 Series 2 race make-up - the schedule that day will be Series 1, Series 2, Series 2 Why do we cancel races? While it is always up to each individual competitor to decide whether to race, we will sometimes cancel races for safety reasons. For example: We will usually cancel regular races if there is too much wind (e.g. a steady breeze of 20 knots or more) or if there is NO wind. We will cancel races for thunderstorms or squalls (and sometimes if the weather forecast is predicting thunderstorms or squalls). We will cancel if we do not have enough patrol boats for the conditions. When do we cancel races? Since we have people coming to CYC by boat, we try to communicate by 12:30 pm if we know that we are not racing. If we are unsure, we may postpone until the conditions become clearer. Trophy Engraving & Return We are asking trophy holders to return them to the Clubhouse early this season so they can be displayed for everyone to see! Reminder - If you won one of the CYC Awards or Season Series trophies last year, you are responsible for getting your name engraved onto the trophy. East Coast Engraving in Hyannis closed permanently last week (!). The best option now seems to be CCI Engraving at 474 Station Ave, South Yarmouth - take old Exit 8 and go South - it will be in a shopping area on the left (across the parking lot from Marathon Sports). Their phone number is 508-398-4433. There is a one-time set-up charge of $25 for each trophy, but once it is in his system the same trophy can be engraved each year without that additional charge. Thank you!
The racing season is just getting underway at CYC and, like every year, we need people to volunteer to patrol the races on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays to keep our sailors safe. If you have a power boat, can operate one of the CYC powerboats, or would just like to assist, please sign up to help patrol some of the races through the CYC volunteer website. Separately, we will be holding our first patrol training this coming Saturday July 1 at 12:00pm noon at CYC. We will have experienced patrollers present to discuss how to assist capsized 420s, Optimists, and other boats and deal with other issues that can happen during races. If you are planning to patrol and can join us, we would greatly appreciate it. Let us know if you have questions and thank you! To assure you, patrolling is straightforward and does not require experience. Quite simply, we need to make sure all the boats that go out for a race return to shore. Brianna Bobola, North Truro Brianna, enrolled in the adult sailing classes, is new to sailing and eager to learn! Alicia & Mark Driscoll, South Chatham and White Plains, NY Mark grew up sailing at CYC with his family and has recently moved back to the East Coast to from Los Angeles. Jocelyn & Shawn Hemingway, Harwich and Ludlow, MA Sawyer (11), previously took classes at PBCB and is now enrolled in the Opti Intermediate program. Alex Maggioni, Chatham and Los Angeles, CA One of the Maggioni siblings! Alex has been around CYC for many years and is participating in the adult sailing program. GROUNDS HELPThe mission of Friends of Pleasant Bay (FoPB) is to preserve and advocate for the extraordinary environmental, cultural, and recreational significance of Pleasant Bay and its watershed through public education, research, and land protection. No boats or sailboards may be carried over the hill to be launched at CYC. Launching may take place at Jack Knife Harbor, the Town Landing on Crow's Pond, Ryder's Cove or in Round Cove, permits may be required. Transportation of 420s and Optis over the hill for the purpose of attending regattas during the summer may occur ONLY before sunrise and after sunset per our lease with Eastward Ho!

The new parking lot configuration allows for multi-directional Fox Hill Road access from three points as illustrated in the diagram below. It is essential that all CYC traffic use the third entrance on Fox Hill road to minimize the access traffic and pedestrian hazards in the other parts of the parking area.
The added parking has improved parking but we, EHCC and CYC, need to continue to optimize on the available parking with the following actions;
Sailing School morning classes
CYC instructors will be available to help students to and from the CYC club house so parents can enjoy the convenience of “drop and go” noted by the yellow cross-hash area. Before 11:30 am, parking maybe available on a 
first-come, first-serve basis in the designated area, highlighted in green box, for parents to bring their children to classes, meet the instructors and fellow parents. Please be aware this area is not exclusive to CYC but shared with EHCC. If there is a shortage of parking spaces in the designated area, please park on the shoulder of Fox Hill Rd. “Pickup and go” will also be available for your convenience at the conclusion of morning classes at the Pick-up spot shown in the diagram. This is a safer and shaded location where our students can be ready for pick-up.
Mid-day
Parking begins to get busy around 11:30 when Eastward Ho! Lunch service begins. After 11:30, We ask that CYC members park on the Fox Hill road shoulder during lunch if the north lot is busy.
Afternoon classes and races
Due to the limited amount of parking spaces, Parents are encouraged to enjoy the convenience of “drop and go” where appropriate for the children. Parents who would like to see your kids in action during the afternoon races can check for available parking spots in the designated (green) area after 2 PM. If there is a shortage of parking spaces at any time, please park on the shoulder of Fox Hill Rd.
Eastward Ho! will have parking lot attendants available to assist with traffic flow and direct CYC members to the designated (green) area. Please don’t hesitate to speak with them if you have any questions or need assistance.
As always, safety is paramount as we balance convenience and consideration for a shared parking resource with our friends at Eastward Ho!

Courtesy and Safety on the Golf Course
Eastward Ho! and CYC have a great working relationship, but it depends on CYC members being courteous to and respectful of the golfers. Please wear shirts and shoes when crossing the hill, and do not use your cell phone. It is best to be quiet when golfers are on the 9th green. You may stop and wait, or move quietly by, but try not to distract those focusing on their putts. |
An average golf ball leaves the tee traveling 115 mph or more, and our path to CYC takes us right in front of the first tee. Adults and children need to take care as they cross in front. Eastward Ho! has provided a fence to protect us. CYC members should stop at the edge of the fence, look and assess the situation. Always wait while golfers are teeing off, but if the golfers are waiting, they may signal it is safe to cross. Be aware as you approach the ninth green as well, since it is just beyond our path.

New this summer! CYC sailor and junior instructor, Harrison Kintz, is offering private and semi-private rowing lessons for pre-sailors and young sailors (as well as sailor parents) on the club beach. The 45-minute lessons will introduce students to the basics of dinghy rowing—while building confidence around boats and the water. In addition to rowing instruction, lessons will teach students about the parts of a boat, rowboat safety, and simple knot tying.
