SPINSHEET
Summer 2021
Spinsheet -2021 Holiday Edition What a season! The summer of 2021 was bound to be a notable one for Chatham Yacht Club due to the Club’s 100th anniversary celebration, but at least I could not have anticipated how special and successful it would be. From CYC’s award-winning entry in the Chatham Independence Day Parade…to hosting the hugely successful Leo J. Telesmanick Beetle Cat Regatta…to our 420 Race Team winning the SMSA junior team racing Durant Trophy…to the huge turnout for the CYC Centennial Gala the night before the CYC Regatta…to all the usual CYC Sailing School classes, races, social events, etc. – it was a Centennial summer to remember forever. None of those memorable events could have happened without the contributions of so many. As a Club that runs on volunteerism, there were countless people involved in making this summer a success. While it would be impossible to name everyone, I would like to highlight a few. Our (newly retired!) Commodore, John Maggioni, led us through this action-packed season; Ted Dickson, Cathy Taylor, Alan McClennen, and many others made the Telesmanick and Baybird events run like clockwork and brought CYC’s 100-year history to life; our amazing Social Committee pulled off the biggest CYC social event ever; Bart Wesp ensured our House and Grounds were always in top shape; Tracy Dart kept us well-informed through the Spinsheet; and, finally, our amazing CYC staff worked tirelessly not only to make the Sailing School operate but did overtime to make all CYC’s other events happen. On behalf of all of us at CYC, thank you! After a breather, we will begin to turn our attention to starting the next 100 years at CYC. As announced at the Closing Meeting, an important initiative in the coming year will be the launch of a new capital campaign that will may be similar in size and ambition as the one for the construction of our Clubhouse a few years ago. CYC has many capital needs that have accumulated over time, including in its sailboat and powerboat fleets, its dock, and other infrastructure. Perhaps more importantly, in the years ahead the CYC beachfront will face challenges from erosion and other climate effects that we need to begin to address now. We will provide more communication on this capital campaign early this next year but please reach out to me with any questions or if you’d like to get involved. Looking forward to next summer, we have some exciting updates for the CYC Sailing School. Sadly, our fearless Program Director for the past two summers, Jeff Howell, has decided not to return this coming summer. We cannot thank Jeff enough for all his leadership through both the Covid-19 crisis and the CYC Centennial. Our Assistant Program Director and 420 Race Team Coach, Ashley Dart, has also decided not to return as she is now focusing on her professional career as a recent college graduate. We cannot thank her enough either and wish both Jeff and Ashley the very best. Fortunately, we have begun to assemble the team who will lead the Sailing School next summer and I’m sure you’ll agree it’s a tremendous group. Ellen Fuller has decided to return to CYC this summer and will lead the Sailing School as our next Program Director. All of you who know Ellen will surely agree that she brings great teaching skills, sailing expertise, leadership abilities, and knowledge of CYC to this role. Grace Gunsalus is returning now as Optimist Program Director and Assistant Program Director while Katelyn McGauley is returning now as 420 Head Race Coach. We are thrilled to have this group providing leadership and we are now accepting staff applications to round out the rest of the Sailing School staff. This fall, our community was saddened to learn of the heartbreaking losses of both Annie Benson and Lee Sheldrick. Let us take a moment to hold their families, and all CYC members who are no longer with us, close to our hearts this season. When we can be together again, we look forward to honoring their memories. As a final planning update, we are seeking to pin down the date of the CYC Mid-Winter Meeting and will communicate that information as soon as it’s finalized. Once again, thank you all for a memorable 2021. I for one feel so grateful to be part of this special community and look forward to the start of CYC’s next century this coming summer. In the meantime, I hope you have a great holiday season and will be back in touch in the New Year with further updates! - Marshall Bartlett, Commodore, Chatham Yacht Club |
