Promoting Sailing on Pleasant Bay Since 1921

Seaman To broaden exposure to different craft, and for students who express a preference for sailing double-handed, students may elect to join the Laser/Sunfish class. Students could progress to this class at any point past one season in Opti I. The focus in this class is very similar to both Optimist classes, but with the twist of likely sailing with a partner, and in a larger, faster boat than the Optimist. Because of the boat’s size, students share the helm with a partner until they demonstrate the capability to safely sail on their own. The Laser/Sunfish class introduces beginner racing concepts and more advanced sailing techniques in a low-pressure environment that utilizes games, activities, drills, and practice races to educate sailors. Sailors who have spent at least one season in Opti I are encouraged to spend at least one year in the Laser/Sunfish class prior to advancing to Helmsman.
