Promoting Sailing on Pleasant Bay Since 1921

Helmsman Helmsman students have mastered the Optimist and/or Laser/Sunfish, are confident in their sailing abilities in all conditions, and have solid knowledge of the racing rules. They advance to sailing 420s, the most prevalent craft in interscholastic and collegiate dinghy racing. 420s are the first boat in the CYC program to introduce the complexities of sailing with more than one sail (main, jib, and spinnaker.) Helmsmen learn double-handed crew work, spinnakers, and improve their boat handling, seamanship, and racing skills. Additionally, Helmsman students are expected to have a sound understanding of boat safety, etiquette, ship-shape, and knot-tying.
