Crew

Crew status is given to beginning sailors. Students spend two years, plus or minus depending on ability, sailing in Beetle Cats. Students sail with an instructor and 2-3 other students. Focus is on learning basic sailing skills, boat parts, points of sail, and water safety. Students have the benefit of close peer and instructor interaction in a safe, stable boat until the student feels comfortable handling the tiller and sail in a relatively independent manner. The main goal of the crew class is to establish a comfort level for the beginner sailor on the water. Games and fun activities are more prevalent in this class. When they demonstrate and understand the rudiments of sailing, students generally move into Optimists (a small single-handed sailing dinghy).
